F.C.Berenberg1779
ALMANAC GENÉALOGIQUE POUR L’ANNEÉ 1779 Lauenbourg, chez F.C.Berenberg [The Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, was a reichsfrei duchy that existed 1296–1803 and 1814–1876 in the extreme southeast region of what is now Schleswig-Holstein.] Small Almanac, text in French for a German/European readership, Pp [xcvii] 182, [ii] in sewn pink now browned silk binding using sequins and what appears to be silver thread , monogrammed with the letters LTH [?] below a crown or coronet suggesting a royal or aristocratic connection.Interesting hand blocked front and rear pastedowns with label [bookseller/ library?] affixed. Frontis engraving and five leaves showing “Habillemens Berlinois “ and “Coéfures de Berlin” by Chodowiecki, Daniel Nikolaus [1726 Danzig - Berlin 1801], with a further six leaves “Coéffures de Leipsic” ,”Coéffures francoises “ and “Coéffures d’Augsbourg” by Rosmaelsler, although the engravings look to be by the same hand. Followed by six much cruder unsigned cuts of variously extraordinary hair styles. Further unsigned vignettes and twelve full page engravings by Chodowiecki, one for each calendar month. There is also a folding plate [ some damage but little loss] showing different cuts of jewels with the accompanying text “Tarif Pour apprécier les Joyaux” [prices given in florins, weights in carats]. The calendar section of the almanac is unnumbered , and gives sunshine and sunset times, appearance of the planets etc, and is followed by a list of the birthdays of the Royal family of Great Britain, and a Genealogical table for the royal houses of Europe. A table of distances gives cities in Germany, there are several pages devoted to world currencies and their comparative values in Louis d’or. Postal history buffs will find interest in the “Guide des Postes” which lists “Poste à cheval” and “ Poste en chariot”. A charming Almanac in an interesting binding worthy of further research.
