J.Lebeque & Cie1870
J. Lebeque et cie., circa 1870, Paris. Terrestrial pocket globe, approx 5 cm diameter, 10.5 cm tall to top of stand lid, and 7cm diameter across the base. Twelve engraved gores pasted over plaster and wooden sphere, metal pins with minor restoration, in a turned French walnut stand, probably original, with fine patina. The engraver is credited as J. C. B. A fine example of a rare pocket globe. The firm of Lebeque was founded in Brussels in 1814 and relocated to Paris in 1850. This tiny terrestrial globe with text in French is an excellent and charming example of a miniature pocket globe with Sydney and Melbourne marked on the continent of Nouvelle Hollande. The United Kingdom is represented by barely a squiggle, China is called Mongolie, Egypt is Arabie, and whilst the Antarctic circle is marked there is no indication of an Antarctic continent. Rare in this Fine condition.
