Circa 1720/30 Dutch "onion" wine bottle
1720
Circa 1730 Dutch “onion” wine bottle with original contents and iridescent finish from long immersion in seawater. Rough pontil mark on the base from manufacturing process. (English examples from the same period have smoothed pontils) Purchased from an antique dealer who bought the bottle from a private gentleman who said that the bottle came from a shipwreck off Antwerp. The date of the bottle and the location are both consistent with the wreck of the Vliegend Hert discovered in 1982. Undamaged bottles are increasingly hard to find; those with iridescence and recovered from wrecks very sought after, and those with contents intact extremely rare. We have only handled one other example, about a hundred years more recent in manufacture.
condition: Very Good
