Unpublished Manuscript1816
Notebook with records of lettings of farms, 1816-41. Approx 6” x 4", full calf boards, metal clasp, rebacked to style. Pp 64 of entries, with plan on left and notes on facing page. Alphabetical index of tenants' names. Name of farm or name of tenant in large letters across top e.g.'George Field's Farm. G.F. quit his Farm 1820. Now in the occupation of J.G. Daley.' 30 very charming and naïve small plans, two folding, some showing just a few fields with their names and acreage, others more intricate plans with small houses in elevation in grey watercolour, fish ponds, etc. There are notes on the plans such as 'ploughing', 'pasture' etc. Three or four probably later plans in a different hand are more sophisticated with scale bar, water features hand coloured, woodland shown. Notes record details of letting, sale of hay 'Let with a Public House (The Engineer) & Premises at œ100 p.a. 1837 Built a stable...'. At the end of the book are 10 further pages of farming notes, treatment for cattle, etc., in a rather shaky hand, the last dated 1859. 1816- 1859. A number of place names are mentioned on the maps including the Pannal to Knaresborough Road, Leeds to Harrogate Road, Hookestone road [all adjacent to Harrogate North Yorkshire], and there is a reference on the first page “the regulation is made in the Township of North Bierley”. This would seem to be an estate book showing farm and field boundaries with field names and acreage, but as yet we have not found the estate owner. Plenty of remaining research to undertake on this manuscript.
