MAN SELLS HIS WIFE FOR FIVE GUINEAS 1803
Printed and Published by Charles Spilsbury, No 3 Angel Court, Snowhill.1803
LLOYD’S EVENING POST Set 14-16 1805. Pp8, disbound. A complete and original issue of this newspaper in Very Good plus condition. Some small holes at spine from sewing. The paper carries a small piece ( about two column inches of very small type) about a young man selling his wife for 5 guineas. He sells her “ a pretty black-eyed girl” to one of his soldier comrades “in the presence of a great number of spectators”. The purchaser had to pay one guinea down and “take the lady one month upon trial, at the expiration of which term...he was to return her or complete the contract....” A key story, underlining the fact that under the law married women were seen as the property of their husbands.
condition: Very Good
